We will reorient and reinvent our criminal justice system to protect the basic rights of all individuals, associations and communities who are subject to the jurisdiction of our State courts. Our aim will be to secure all people and property against harm in a manner that is accountable, restorative, and non-discriminatory; all while leaving behind the polarization and fear-based “law and order” rhetoric that dehumanizes entire demographic groups and propagates a dangerous “us vs them” mentality. We will revise our criminal code and enforcement practices as needed to eliminate all vestiges of Jim Crow within our system. We will employ community-based interventions and diversion programs, while decriminalizing low-level drug and possession offenses, based on evidence that shows such alternatives will improve public health and safety without contributing to Ohio's problem of mass incarceration.
