Elected officials, as well as everyone else who works in government, have the responsibility to be ethical in their work and all their interactions with the general public. Innovative means of integrating ethics into government service could include establishing a new system of incentives for government agencies to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of providing government services to the public, including leasing, permitting, and other regulatory approvals. State government has a major role in promoting civil society and community health programs in many ways, including supporting a sustainable state hospital system, in-patient and out-patient mental health care system, alcohol and drug rehabilitation services, and community health education outreach programs.
