The idea that somebody could go to jail for possession of drug paraphernalia is ridiculous. We need to spend tax dollars on reformation, not retention. Denise will also make it a priority to get private business out of our prisons. Learn more
Ensuring that Oklahoma has a healthy, sustainable economy is about recruiting, establishing, and supporting businesses, both large and small. Perception is reality when it comes to attracting new businesses and the families that come with them. We must take bold action to change people’s poor perception of Oklahoma; we can’t move forward and build a thriving economy until we do. We must facilitate more public-private partnerships. The Gathering Place in District 71 is a nationwide example of how these partnerships can be successful and beneficial to the communities around them. Learn more
Public education is still in a crisis. We have taken some steps to remedy the problem but they are not nearly enough – we cannot go backwards. Year after year we see attempts by not only outside groups, but also short-sighted politicians at the Capitol, to siphon funds from public schools. Representative Brewer fully understands that public education funds belong to public schools and they should never be redirected to for-profit entities who’s primary concern is their own profit margin or the ending line balance of their shareholders. We continue to see teachers leaving the profession or the state for better opportunities. There is a simple solution to this problem and we need legislators like Rep. Brewer who will continue to fight for proper funding, even if this means dipping into the Rainy Day Fund. Or, better yet, reduce allocations to the savings account and get caught up on the bills we should have been paying in the first place. Learn more
Education is one of the biggest driving forces of a healthy economy. Without a top-of-the-line public education system, recruiting business that create new jobs and bring families to Oklahoma, will continue to be a major challenge for our state. Companies look for healthy public education systems where many of their employees will enroll their children in K-12 schools and when we continue to be near the bottom in the nation, there is little incentive for those families to move to our state. We have a Governor who believes he is above the law and a Republican majority who gladly took away the checks-and-balances on the executive branch. You can’t run a government like a business and the failures of this Governor and his party make that blatantly clear. Our Governor is out of touch with the people of Oklahoma. His priorities seem to be appointing his cronies, keeping the rich comfortable, and not a concern for the hardworking people of Oklahoma. Learn more
We must stop treating mental health care separately from general healthcare. Proper mental health care is just as important and should be regarded in the same way. It is time that Oklahoma properly invests in access to mental health providers and rehabilitation. Learn more
Denise will fight policies which would result in driving up rates for others and likely leading to the closure of health care facilities vital across Oklahoma. Denise will adamantly oppose any proposal that does not protect Oklahomans from rising healthcare costs, higher premiums, and out-of-pocket expenses while ensuring those with preexisting conditions cannot be denied coverage or charged more. Representative Brewer will continue her fight for a statewide living wage of $15 per hour for hourly workers, paid family leave, and an increase to the hourly rate of tipped workers. The simple reality is that a dollar does not go as far as it did 10, 20, or 30 years ago and it is far past time for us to increase the minimum wage. It’s simple: when people do well in Oklahoma, they stay in Oklahoma and fuel our economy. Learn more
