Get StartedArizona should reinvest in areas that are proven to reduce incarceration rather than spending more money locking people up. And when we do have to incarcerate people, we shouldn't be turning it into a business. There should be no profit motive to increase the prison population in Arizona. Learn more
Arizona has a massive prison problem. Private prisons create perverse incentives to incarcerate people to keep profits up, and when it comes to the business of prisons, Arizona is very lucrative. Arizona has the highest prison occupancy guarantees in the nation, guaranteeing private prison companies that the state will fill anywhere between 90 and 100 percent. Learn more
Unfortunately, our failure to fund education has created conditions where low graduation rates lead to more crime, which keeps cells full and does irreparable damage to people’s lives and our state’s economy. By advocating for common-sense criminal justice reform, I hope to reduce the number of citizens we are sending to prisons, and scale back the demand for prison facilities as a whole. Learn more
We should also address the roots of criminal activity by treating drug abuse and addiction with rehabilitation and therapy rather than incarceration, helping divert people back into society before having to spend thousands of dollars to lock them up. We can be compassionate in our work to keep our neighborhoods safe. Learn more
I will work to create the conditions that lead to economic growth, by making prudent investments in education and infrastructure. With an academic background in finance, I understand the importance of growth and development, both for the business community and for working-class Arizonans. It’s time for a new approach for our state. Learn more
I will work every day to ensure we properly fund our schools and bring better sense to the Arizona legislature. Investing in education today builds an economy for tomorrow. I believe in the strength and possibilities of empowered Arizonans from all walks of life. Our future will be determined by the investments we make today. Learn more
My opponent, Republican Rep. Jay Lawrence, has been publicly rebuked by the Arizona School Boards Association for his role in slashing funding from public education and for misleading people about the source of the teacher pay crisis.(1) He’s also on record recommending schools have fewer counselors and instead invite armed veterans to patrol the halls.(2). Climate change is happening and it’s having effects all across the globe. While we don't have to worry too much about rising sea levels in Arizona, we are having record-breaking heat, historic droughts, and an increase in wildfires. All of these are serious problems that demand our attention. Learn more
This irrecoverable loss of water will definitely impact our state’s future, possibly more than any other environmental factor. I will work to ensure the Arizona Department of Water Resources has the funding and tools it needs to protect our state’s water supply, and I will work to tighten regulations around rural groundwater wells and improve well monitoring so we can track the impact different wells are having on our natural resources. Arizonans have the right to know who is trying to influence their elections, and I will work to ensure any campaign contribution of $1,000 or more is part of the public record. Everyone deserves the right to free speech in elections, and citizens also deserve to know who is doing the talking. Learn more
Arizona could benefit from solar power more than any other state in the country, and I will support efforts to reduce the cost of home solar installations, as well as help our utility companies transition to producing clean energy production. Arizona should be a leader in clean, renewable energy. Learn more
We have cut taxes every year for a quarter of a century to the point where the revenue lost through various tax diversion policies is now larger than the entire state budget. If we don't change something soon we will end up in a tragic cycle where more Arizonans are reliant on public assistance while there are fewer Arizonans to support them. We cannot continue to rely on the same policies and expect different results. Learn more
