Program such as a junior fire fighters' program have been employed at local schools and seen great success. Additionally, by expanding the tax credit for fire fighters and first responders and working on a vestment system to IPERS, we can create some tangible ways to give back to the people that volunteer to help keep our communities and people safe. Lastly, by adequately working with public safety, county health departments and the state we can provide pilot programs to help address the much-needed support for our citizens struggling with mental health. Lawmakers could also help facilitate first-time homeownership by providing assistance with down payments and offering affordable interest rates through a state-run homeowner revolving loan program. Lawmakers could specifically create a program to focus on rural communities and individuals who serve in the public sector, such as teachers or care giving professions, or for young families that are committed to creating small businesses, industry or farming our land. To ensure that our best and brightest stay in Iowa and invest in our state, policy makers should create larger tax credits for small businesses and medium sized industries that are committed to expanding and diversifying our business and industry sectors, especially in rural Iowa. Learn more
To sustain rural schools, immediate action must be taken to allocate more funding to small districts. The state must also allow more flexibility within the current tax code to allow local towns to lift their taxes to keep their schools open. Learn more
To help our soil, lawmakers could create tax credits or grant programs for farmers to plant cover crops during the winter, implement "no-till" farming practices, build out our CRP program and help farmers transition away from chemicals that pose high risk to not only the environment but also their health. Escalating costs relating to standard of living, childcare and health insurance are also challenging factors for many entrepreneurs and small businesses. To combat this, Iowa should develop a wage enhancement program for essential small business services (those related to care giving and health occupations) as well as allow small businesses to form co-operative health insurance groups.
