For years, we have failed to meaningfully address some of our most pressing issues, and it has caught up with us. All of the critical challenges we are facing today -- lack of affordable health care, lack of urgent action on clean energy, outrageous wealth inequality, and deep structural racism, have been a long time in the making. The disparities in Minnesota are some of the worst in the nation, leading some to refer to Minnesota as “the deep north.” This should be unacceptable to all of us. The causes are deep and far-reaching, crossing over into our economic, education, public safety, and civic institutions. Eliminating these disparities will require comprehensive, far-reaching reforms in all of these areas -- and a commitment to change from legislators and our community. Learn more
We are on the brink of climate emergency and a mass extinction event that poses an existential threat to our economy, our democracy, and our way of life. We must address this emergency together and do what it takes to make sure all Duluthians have safe, secure housing. We can address this through prioritizing affordable housing to meet Duluth’s shortfall. Learn more
We must address the roots of poverty and homelessness, and we must meet people where they are at. This means providing job training, mental health care, and supportive services for those addressing trauma and substance abuse, without the stigma and without shame. We need to allocate the resources needed to support parents and children and to ensure that every family gets the help they need the moment they need it, instead of waiting for families to fall into crisis. I’ll continue to prioritize bringing home the Local Government Aid dollars that will allow the City of Duluth to provide vital services while holding the line on property taxes. High-income earners statewide must pay their fair share so that the burden of providing local services doesn’t fall so heavily on struggling homeowners. Learn more
