For example, transgender women of color are a highly vulnerable population and are considered disposable in this society. We must implement anti-discrimination initiatives in public schools nationwide to stop these human rights abuses." Learn more
"As a carrier of burdensome student loan debt from law school, I support federal legislation to relieve the 43 million borrowers of their collective $1.4 trillion in student loans owned by the US Department of Education. The suffocating debts incurred in the pursuit of education are an unjust tax on the continued growth, evolution, and ingenuity of America’s students and the future of our country." Learn more
"The federal minimum wage has been $7.25/hr since 2009. Before that, it was $5.15/hr. These numbers are real—and they are indefensible. The minimum wage must be raised—incrementally over time—to at least $15/hr. Research has shown that even slightly higher wages decrease rates of suicide and crime. Increasing the minimum wage to a more humane amount will have far reaching and positive effects." Learn more
"The US should be the world LEADER in addressing the global environmental crisis. The federal government's current position on global warming is pathetic, dangerous, and inexcusable. Once in Congress, I will pass legislation that will help eliminate our reliance on fossil fuels, which are responsible for polluting our atmosphere and which contribute directly to the global environmental crisis." "I support the Green New Deal. Clean air, clean water, and healthy food are basic human rights. The Green New Deal aims to reduce harmful emissions into the atmosphere and eliminate our reliance on fossil fuels. Its provisions also focus on economic development and job training particularly in communities that rely on jobs in the fossil fuel industry. Black and brown communities are often more greatly impacted by air pollution, unclean drinking water, and other environmental hazards. The Green New Deal seeks to address and correct these historic and long-standing inequities by focusing on environmental, economic, and racial justice issues." Learn more
"It is essential that the US rejoin the Paris Agreement and the Iran Nuclear Deal. Pulling out of these agreements was brash and irresponsible and has brought uncertainty and instability to much of the world. We must also ensure that North Korea does not have the ability to further develop a nuclear program. Also, the US cannot keep fighting endless wars all over the world. We need to rebuild our diplomatic standing on the world stage, and redirect some military spending to invest in critical services and programs for service members and veterans in need of support — including jobs, health care, education, and mental health services." "I have been selected as a Moms Demand Action Guns Sense candidate in this race. The NRA will not bully me. We can defend the Constitution AND enact sensible gun laws that can save the lives of our children and loved ones. We must ban assault weapons, conduct universal background checks, restrict magazine size, provide for a waiting period, impose criminal penalties on individuals who do not restrict access to firearms, and institute robust national mental health counseling." "We must either protect and continue to improve the ACA by adding a public option and trying harder to make it work for all Americans, or we must have Medicare available to all of us. The current health care system in this country is an abomination. Its complexity and corrupt, profit-driven private insurance company-benefitting model, at the expense of human life, is criminal and must end." Learn more
"It is essential that we invest in our communities, families, and small businesses by improving public transportation, investing in public schools, paying teachers a livable wage, creating sustainable jobs for both youth and adults, investing in community and school-based programs to address issues such as drug use and violent crime, and increase access to and availability of essential services, healthy food, health care, and housing. The lack of safe and affordable housing, decent paying jobs, and reliable and extensive public transportation is a serious public health and welfare issue that I will work with all of our communities to help change. The federal government needs to look at universal basic income as one potential way to positively impact the social and economic burdens so many in our communities face." Learn more
"It is beyond comprehension that in the United States of America we do not have paid family and medical or sick leave available to all employees at the federal level. It is absolutely essential for Congress to pass legislation that mandates employers to provide paid leave to employees to use when they or a family member are sick or for other family and medical reasons including the birth or adoption of a child, or the placement of a child in foster care. Congress also has to figure out long-term affordable childcare options for families. Our government has not been responsive to our basic needs or the needs of our communities and families. In Congress, I will pass legislation to finally bring us into the 21st century." Learn more
