Get StartedEducation is paramount to a successful society. Our students and teachers should always feel safe in school. Our students should all receive a good and equitable education. Along with safeguarding affordable options for college, Kerri will focus on technical schools so every student can have a great career. Similar to programs like teach across America, inviting students to have their cost of higher education or technical school covered in return for them living and working in CT for 5-10 years depending on the cost of education. This encourages graduates to lay down roots, start their businesses and create jobs in CT, while also creating a more competitive market and force costs down for those learning institutions that people will otherwise pay privately for. Everyone deserves the healthcare they need. Kerri will ensure our communities, families and children stay healthy without having to choose between care and cost. There are a few approaches here. One is expanding the Medicare/Single payer system option to everyone. We pay into Medicare in our taxes, create an enormous buying power through the numbers enrolled to bring down the costs associated with healthcare. Single payer significantly decreases the overhead that every health provider pays in billing. Individuals don’t have to choose between cost and care and are more likely to comply because their medications and care aren’t cost prohibitive. This ensures better health outcomes and decreases emergency room visits due to lack of care. It saves money and lives. Learn more
We need a 21st century technological infrastructure that works when we need it to. Kerri will work to modernize our utilities with underground connectivity & universal internet access. We’ll streamline our government agencies with integrated technology that is designed for people to navigate easily. We have a governing agency, PURA, that oversees utilities. PURA needs to be more empowered to hold our utilities accountable and put in place consequences when service isn’t provided in the way it should be. Eversource is a monopoly that makes millions for shareholders & CEO’s while increasing our rates exponentially and not ensuring readiness during emergencies. Like every company, it is the responsibility of Eversource to improve service to customers, but with a monopoly they have no motivation unless PURA has the power to hold them accountable. It’s the responsibility of Eversource to get our electrical lines buried to ensure fewer breaks in service. Universal internet access can be developed through a marriage of government and private grants. This has already been done in Hartford, they are working on it in New Haven (as I recall). After the initial outlay of expense in the city, the annual cost was estimated at about $100k in a city of 177k people. That’s a few dollars cost per household instead of each household paying exorbitant costs on a monthly basis. Learn more
The middle class is being squeezed in Connecticut. We must make difficult and meaningful decisions while balancing factual, emotional, social and financial considerations about things that really matter. Kerri will apply fiscal discipline to ensure that relief is reaching those who need it most. We need a more equitable tax distribution. That means taxes on.a sliding scale, where the lower and middle income earners are not paying more taxes proportionally to the uber-wealthy. Learn more
