Spurred by Allendale residents running out of water in 2008, a study that concluded in 2018 revealed alarming revelations about dangers to the water supply in greater Ottawa County. These dangers included diminishing groundwater levels and elevated amounts of sodium chloride. Areas of West Michigan have also suffered from PFAS contaminants in drinking water.
