Get StartedOur veterans have risked their lives to ensure the safety of ours. The least we can do is make sure that every veteran and their family is taken care of. I hosted a Veterans Benefits Resource Fair, to bring services, resources and information to veterans in one convenient location. I also voted for two tax credits, the Returning Heroes and Wounded Warrior Tax Credits, which incentivize the hiring of veterans. Learn more
We must ensure the viability of these businesses. I will continue to fight for access to better credit sources for new and existing companies. I have conducted a series of Small Business Seminars to connect local owners with needed resources to encourage lenders to provide small businesses with the credit necessary to operate, expand, and add jobs. I strongly support policies that help Americans sustain, grow and start small businesses. Our small businesses are the backbone of our local economy, and are integral to America’s economic recovery. Yet, without consumer demand, our small businesses will not be able to flourish, which is why a strong middle class is so important. Learn more
As a member of the House of Representatives Agriculture Committee, I work to strengthen and protect federal feeding and hunger programs and initiatives. New and non-traditional farmers like those who live and work in our neighborhoods, are my priority. I truly believe the best of the Eleventh District’s urban agriculture and wellness movement is only yet to come. Learn more
I’ve hosted numerous forums and events related to STEM education, because know how important Science, Technology, Energy and Mathematics will be for the jobs of the future. I have sponsored numerous education bills aimed at improving the infrastructure in our schools and protecting our students. I will continue to work to strengthen our public education system and modernize our classrooms. It’s imperative that we increase federal standards for educational achievement and maintain the best trained, most qualified teachers in our classrooms. Learn more
Voting is the most fundamental right in our democracy, yet many Republican legislatures across the nation are passing legislation that drastically limits the ability of Americans to vote. In 2011, nineteen laws and two executive actions passed in 14 states. These new laws could make it significantly harder for more than five million eligible voters to cast ballots in 2012. These changes will hit vulnerable communities the hardest: our seniors, those who are disabled, college students, and low-income Americans. It is unconstitutional, and unacceptable. These provisions will prevent eligible Americans from participating in our democracy. Learn more
Ensuring our children have an opportunity to succeed is important to every parent. Making sure they are healthy enough to enjoy a long, productive life is a large part of the equation. I have dedicated myself to the cause of eradicating childhood obesity because we have no more time to waste. A study conducted by University Hospitals found that the obesity rate in Ohio is 36% for children 10 -17. If we don’t face this epidemic head on with practical solutions, 23 million children run the risk of being the first American generation to live shorter life spans than their parents. Learn more
Unfortunately, in Ohio, 9.1 percent of all home loans are behind but not yet in foreclosure, up from 8.3 percent, and loans in Ohio that are 30 days behind jumped by 20 percent from the first quarter to the second. These figures demonstrate the challenge that lies ahead. Know that I am committed to restoring the American dream of owning a home and I will stand and fight hand-in-hand with my constituents until hope is restored. Learn more
I hosted a Job Fair in August, which brought together over 120 employers, from both the public and private sectors, looking to hire. About 700 residents in our community secured employment because of this event. I’m ready to see more progress on jobs, and I’m sure you are too. We need to rebuild our economy based on balance, fairness, and the same set of rules for everyone from Wall Street to Main Street. We can create the jobs of the future by helping small business entrepreneurs, investing in education, and focusing on fixing our schools and bridges, as well as supporting innovation. And we must build the workforce of the future. Learn more
