Get StartedLegalize it. Banning abortion doesn't solve anything. Texas is one of the worst states, doctors can even lose their license doing life-saving care. If you don't like abortion, make child birth affordable. Make child raising affordable. Make being a stay-at-home mother an option financially. Poverty makes abortion the only option for many people. But, Republicans get to feel good about banning abortion without having to actually care for poor people. Learn more
Legalize recreational marijuana use. Learn more
Do I really have to say it? Taking money out of the public school budget for anything is stupid, taking it out to fund private schools that you and I dang sure can't afford is beyond reprehensible. Our public schools are falling apart and don't pay their teachers enough, I want quality Texas PUBLIC schools. Which is a heck of a lot different than my Republican opponent saying she wants quality schools. Learn more
But we need well-funded public schools with functioning air conditioning, up-to-date buildings, and enough teachers and support staff to make even the worst-off kids have an equal chance at success later in life. It's the least we can do. Public schools are our last line of defense against illiteracy, poverty, and even starvation for Texas kids. Breaking them breaks any hope of a good future for Texas and for America. Learn more
The DMV is backlogged. CPS is understaffed. SNAP is backed up months. Prisons don't have enough guards, or air conditioning. Learn more
Texas doesn't have any. It pretty much ruins your life to have a felony sex conviction, and there's nothing but mandatory minimums for kids even if the relationship started in high school and is stupid, sure, but not creepy. And you know her daddy hates his guts and is gonna get a good lawyer. I think Texas needs a Romeo and Juliet law. There's plenty of States that have proven ones we can copy. Learn more
I don't know how we can incentivize privately held land to open to the public, but I think the State should encourage that. Financing, taxes, and insurance deals generally make things happen though. I think it's a conversation the State should have, how to make it possible for all Texans to enjoy the outdoors - and how we actually want to, not how politicians think we want to. Learn more
I am 100% for Red Flag Laws. If yah know someone is gonna hurt themselves or others with a firearm, actually get action out of the police, now. How about we make this easy on our voters though and put something that isn't over-reaching and has judicial checks against abuse, like Indiana's Jake Laird Law. Indiana's about as Republican a state as you can find, too, this shouldn't be a partisan issue. In the first 10 years, this law knocked suicides down 7.9%. That's a reduction Texas could use. I come from Canada, which has single payer healthcare. About the same trouble getting a doctor or specialist as here, really, rural is a bit better in Canada in my experience as there's programs to encourage new and immigrant doctors to take those roles as they start out. But, it's a heck of a lot cheaper. My brother got airlifted to Sudbury, Ontario after breaking his femur, $0. I have good insurance from my employer in Texas and I was still out of pocket $6k for my daughter's birth. Still sore about the mandatory hearing test not only not being covered but not being in network. That's a bad law. Learn more
We need to reign in insurance companies so people don't get turned down when they should get approved, and so our hospitals actually get paid what they need to stay open. Unlike Bowie's hospital. Rural medical access is a downright crisis here. Gainesville's nearly closed too. Learn more
The dot com crash followed by the sub prime mortgage recession means new builds slowed to a crawl since 2008. We need more houses built, especially more starter houses without HOAs and Special Utility Districts, so that we can get house prices down, our property taxes under control, and our friends can actually find somewhere to live they can afford without working 4 jobs. The border and immigration is Federal jurisdiction. Not something Texas should be volunteering billions of taxpayer dollars to secure. Also, Federal immigration law is very out of date, and the bureaucracy that processes people is decades behind due to chronic underfunding. The current border crisis is no surprise, it's been a problem for decades. But, asylum seekers and migrants can't vote, and make a very convenient bogeyman to scare voters with. Learn more
I have friends and family that are dealership mechanics, and it's really annoying to see them not get paid for manufacturer warranty work. A number of states have put laws in place to make auto manufacturers pay their dealers the same as a customer when warranty work is needed on a new vehicle. Texas needs one of these laws. It's important a Texas law close the loophole where, say, changing a steering rack on a 4x4 gets charged the same as a 2wd, or other cases where the book time is not based on the actual vehicle getting work done. Different trim and options take different amounts of work, but boy howdy is corporate not interested in paying. Our mechanics are feeling it on their paycheck. Learn more
