Get StartedI will champion legislation that mandates funding to the VA for each person who enters into the military that cannot be cut, offset or diverted. This money will be in addition to regular administrative and operational funding, so that there will always be sufficient money to care for each veteran. Moreover, VA funding should be part of the military budget and not under domestic discretionary spending. Care for our veterans is part and parcel of the cost of war, it should be funded that way. I strongly support an expansion of the PELL Grant program so that kids from lower and middle-income households can afford to go to college and stay in school until they graduate. I am also in favor of a “National Service” program, in which the college or trade school education of a student will be paid if they choose to serve the country in an area of critical need for the first 4-6 years of their career. And for those who have already graduated and are pursuing public interest careers, their student loan debt should be forgiven after a reasonable period of public service. Learn more
I will advocate for laws that guarantee the equitable distribution of resources to ensure that every child is given the opportunity to compete and succeed. Public charter schools must be held to the same standards applicable to public schools, and facilities that are paid for by the taxpayers should remain in taxpayer control. In general, I oppose privatizing our public schools. Privatization not only drives down teacher wages and impedes collective bargaining rights, but all too often it results in the resegregation of schools along race and class lines. Learn more
When it comes to the environment, it’s really pretty simple: follow science. Too many in Congress and this Administration refuse to do that and instead allow the polluters to write–and rewrite–the rules. In Congress, I will fight such behavior every step of the way. Learn more
While I plan to work toward a single payer, Medicare-for-All system, if necessary, I will vote for any health care legislation that takes steps in that right direction, including building upon the Affordable Care Act by adding Medicare to the health care exchange, lowering the age of Medicare availability to 55 and any other reasonable policy that can pass the Congress and move us toward universal coverage. I will make sure that Medicaid is strengthened and expanded to ensure Americans do not end up neglected or without needed health care options. Learn more
