Get StartedI will support developing a new Micro Lending Program for small business opening in the city. The program will provide low-interest and no-interest loans to assist these businesses with startup costs. The program will link these entrepreneurs with other existing resources to assist them with growing their business. Key to this program will be connecting the business owners with our skilled workforce. I will consistently advocate for small business and new entrepreneurs, especially women and people of color. As a council member, I would propose increased support for Cyber Security, Technology, and apprenticeship programs. We can build a workforce prepared to succeed by leveraging partnerships within our high schools, higher education institutions and the private sector. Learn more
I will ensure that we work with our state legislators to support restoring state funding for K-12 schools. On the local level, I will find creative ways to ensure that we maximize our support of education by investing in STEM, college preparation, job training and career training. Our children deserve to be educated in schools with well-paid teachers and advanced technology. We need accountability to ensure our children are properly prepared for success after high school. I will work tirelessly to continue the work that City Council already has implemented on this front. Furthermore, I will seek to advocate that the state provides the city with the authority to implement sensible gun ordinances. It is important that we work to minimize the threat of gun violence in our great city. Learn more
I will use this seat to propose innovative solutions to combating the ongoing homelessness and hunger of Roanoke’s less fortunate citizens. One of the ways I plan to help in this effort, is pledging 15 percent of my yearly salary as a councilman to nonprofits that provide support to those less fortunate. Learn more
Additionally, I would ensure that there are safe spaces in the community for our youth to congregate, strive to provide opportunities for our youth during school breaks, summer vacations and other times when schools are closed. Learn more
I would institute a Day of Hunger program, where citizens of Roanoke would collect can goods from local grocery stores and donate can goods at each grocery store. This initiative is important in supporting our food pantries in the city and to show the great heart and care we have for our fellow citizens. Learn more
I believe a public/private partnership is needed to satisfy the transportation concerns we have. This is an ongoing issue that we must solve in order to grow and sustain job creation and growth. Learn more
