My approach to truancy is to hold teenagers accountable for their actions by involving the community. By performing community services – working with seniors, repairing fences, etc. – they will be exposed to life skills and important conversations, communal knowledge and vast experiences. In addition, they will spend their time productively and contribute to the common good, a concept that is new and rewarding for many youngsters, and can deliver a new outlook on goals, life in general, and their own future. I believe truancy is a needed component of the judicial system, an issue that needs representation on the justice of the peace level, because not only does truancy result in the loss of education for our young people, but it also has an adverse trickle-down effect on our community at large. The pandemic, of course, is currently a wild card. With eviction moratoriums on, then off, then on again, one party or the other stands to take a financial hit. Together with governments on all levels, we must find a way to obtain resources that allow tenants to maintain their residency while also paying at least a portion of their rent. At the same time, financial support must be allocated for landlords whose livelihoods are affected by the moratoriums on evictions to enable them to recoup at least some of their losses. Learn more
