Recently, Virginia emerged as a leader in marijuana legalization, becoming the first state in the South to legalize cannabis for adults 21 and older. However, our work to expand reform of antiquated laws around cannabis has only just begun. The historical and continued criminalization of Black and Brown people is a direct result of the disproportionate enforcement of cannabis prohibition in the Commonwealth. The next generation deserves to breathe unpolluted air; to see green spaces in their neighborhoods; to travel using public transportation. It is our responsibility to protect the environment by decreasing our dependence on crude oil and increasing our investments in climate legislation like the Green New Deal in Virginia. Learn more
We know that Black and Brown communities suffer higher rates of asthma cases, a direct impact of pollution. Eastern Henrico has land that is vulnerable to over-development, exacerbating pollution in the area. Terrence will fight to protect the integrity and health of our land, and especially residential areas. Virginia is at a tipping point in terms of how we protect the environment. We have the power to affect change at the state level by championing policies that will secure a health future for all of us. Learn more
It is the primary responsibility of lawmakers to look out for the best interests of their constituents. In light of this sacred responsibility, Terrence will use his power as a legislator to ensure access to quality, affordable healthcare. When Black women are almost three times as likely to die from birth-related complications than white women, we must act to protect pregnant people, new parents, and their infants.
