There are ways to manage our services more efficiently like the recently passed and now being organized Regional Dispatch to coordinate emergency responses seamlessly across our region. In the State House, I will be an advocate for policies that motivate the dual purposing of our impermeable surfaces that are creating water quality issues in Lake Champlain from stormwater runoff. We need to align incentives to get private property owners to want to build cantilever Solar Panel frames over their parking lots (like what is over the Echo Center parking lot in Burlington, pictured above) so we stop putting solar panels in green fields that make our state beautiful. Over parking lots, these solar panels will shield our cars from the snow, the sleet and the sun rather than disrupting the bucolic scenery that makes Vermont, Vermont. But most importantly, to reduce our carbon footprint, we need a growing economy, a growing revenue base and a growing population. Growth attracts investment, renewal and enrichment. We can't upgrade our practices with stagnation and we need growth to support strategic investments in new infrastructure to implement environmental strategies that support our people and our planet. As chair of the Green Mountain Transit Board, I have been a staunch advocate for expanding and enhancing public transportation in Vermont. From my service, I know we need to modernize our funding formula for public transit similar to other states using sources that fairly assess the cost of de-congesting our roads on all of those who use them. This can be done with car registration fees, toll by plate or expanded assessment ability based on regionally determined need. To achieve our carbon emission reduction objectives, we need to rethink how we pay for public transportation to make the service more attractive to more Vermonters. Learn more
But most importantly, to make Vermont more affordable we need to reduce the tax burden on our residents. This can be done with regionalizing our services, growing our economy, growing our tax base and attracting more people to our state. Learn more
